Alhaya Haque

Description

Alhaya Haque (Right to Life) is an 18 month regional project funded by the European Commission via the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) and aimed at the abolition of the death penalty in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.

Implemented in partnership with Sharek Youth Forum in Palestine, Nama’a –Women for Cultural Development in Jordan, ALEF- Act for Human Rights in Lebanon, and Andalus Centre for Tolerance and Anti-Violence Studies in Egypt, the project tackles the importance of shaping public opinion in favor of abolition of the death penalty and also influencing official attitudes and perceptions.

The project is designed to lead to three main results:

  1. The creation of local and regional networks of young activists in each of the participating countries.
  2. A public information campaign on the arguments against the death penalty and steps taken internationally to end its use as a punishment since public opinion might form one of the major obstacles to abolition. Material available on the topic in the Arab world is generally aimed at a professional audience and is not easily accessible to the public in Arabic.
  3. To engage officials and the public in lobbying and advocacy activities aimed specifically to raise the issue of abolition among decision makers and key government officials in the justice system of the relevant countries.
